The last surviving member of a family of five, who suffered critical burns in a gas leak explosion at their home in Fatullah, Narayanganj, died at the National Institute of Burns and Plastic Surgery this morning -- latest in a chain of deaths that claimed the entire family over five days.

Sayema Akhter, 30, died around 9:00am at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, said Resident Surgeon Dr Shawon Bin Rahman.

He said Sayema had around 60 percent burns, including in her airways, and had been undergoing treatment at the HDU.

Her husband and three children had died earlier.

Her son Munna, 12, and daughter Muni, 7, died yesterday. Another daughter, Kotha, 5, died on Wednesday, while her husband, Abul Kalam, 35, died on Monday.

The family sustained burns when a gas leak triggered an explosion at their rented home near Gram Bangla Tower in the Giridhara area around 7:00am on May 10, 2026.

Neighbour Md Hasan, who took the victims to the burn institute, said he heard a loud bang and rushed to the house.

Flames were coming from inside the room, and locals pulled the family out before rushing them to the hospital, he said.

Hasan said the explosion was believed to have been caused by accumulated gas from a leak in the kitchen.

Sayema’s younger brother, Md Arman, said Kalam had been preparing to leave for the vegetable market where he worked. He had gone to reheat leftover curry when he lit a matchstick, triggering the blast.
