Home ministry budget rises 14.4%

• Ministry gets Tk 31,099cr for FY2026-27
• Police get the largest share: Tk 18,793cr

The government has proposed an allocation of around Tk 31,099 crore for the home ministry in the 2026-27 fiscal year, highlighting its ongoing commitment to public security, modernising law enforcement, and developing infrastructure.

According to budget documents, the proposed allocation is 14.4 percent higher than the revised allocation of Tk 27,174 crore for FY2025-26.

A notable feature of the proposal is a sharp increase in development spending. The ministry’s development budget has been proposed at Tk 2,460 crore, up 89.4 percent from the revised allocation of Tk 1,298 crore in the current fiscal year.

Among the agencies under the ministry, Bangladesh Police will receive the largest share, with a proposed allocation of Tk 18,793 crore. Of the amount, Tk 18,143 crore has been earmarked for operational expenditures and Tk 650 crore for development activities.

Major police projects include the procurement of advanced equipment for the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, construction of the Rapid Action Battalion headquarters, establishment of a Counter-Terrorism and International Crime Prevention Centre, and implementation of the “Safer Cyberspace for Digital Bangladesh” project aimed at strengthening digital investigations and preventing gender-based violence.

Welcoming the proposed increase in development spending, Md Sibgat Ullah, additional inspector general of police (development), told The Daily Star that improved infrastructure would enhance the force’s ability to serve the public more effectively.

For border security, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has been allocated Tk 4,602 crore, including Tk 62 crore for development projects. The funds will be used to construct 73 modern composite border observation posts and develop infrastructure for the 63rd BGB Battalion in Gazipur.

The Bangladesh Coast Guard is set to receive Tk 1,125 crore, of which Tk 406 crore has been earmarked for development activities, including the procurement of new vessels and the enhancement of maritime surveillance and operational capacity.

The Directorate of Prisons has been allocated Tk 1,360 crore. Of the amount, Tk 152 crore will be spent on the reconstruction of Mymensingh Central Jail, preservation of historic structures at the former Dhaka Central Jail site, and construction of the Narsingdi District Jail.

The Department of Fire Service and Civil Defence has been proposed an allocation of Tk 1,034 crore, including Tk 135 crore for development projects. The allocation will support the construction of 20 new fire stations and two multi-storey residential buildings for personnel.

The Department of Narcotics Control is set to receive Tk 498 crore, with Tk 199 crore earmarked for development projects, which include the establishment of seven 200-bed treatment centres for drug addicts in the country’s seven divisional cities.

Meanwhile, Tk 2,185 crore has been proposed for the Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Party in the FY2026-27.
