Jamaat ameer warns government over July reform proposals

Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and opposition leader Shafiqur Rahman said today that they will not let it go if the government does not take initiative to implement the reform proposals made following the July uprising.

“If the government takes initiative, we, as the opposition, will extend full cooperation. But if the government does not take initiative, then we will speak there on behalf of the people,” he said after launching “Clean Dhaka, Green Dhaka” programme in his constituency in Mirpur and Kafrul area.

He said not taking oath as a member of the Reform Council amounts to insulting July.

“It is because of this July that this election was held. Because this election was held, Tarique Rahman became prime minister, and I became opposition leader. If July had not come, could we have become these? Could we have got this opportunity to serve?” Shafiqur said.

He said July must be recognised and honoured, and all reform proposals that have come forward based on the aspirations of July must be implemented as a sacred responsibility of the parliament.

“You know that yesterday we took two oaths, one as members of parliament and another as members of the Reform Council. We want to go to parliament and do something good for the country, In Sha Allah. And through reforms, we want to remove the garbage of society, from garbage on the streets, in drains and scattered waste, to the garbage in people’s minds,” he added.

The Jamaat ameer said his participation in today’s cleanliness drive means giving a message to the constituents and the people of the country that they will build a clean society.
