Farmer jailed, fined for killing weaver birds, destroying nests in Chattogram

Birds killed over alleged crop damage; mobile court finds dead chicks and broken eggs in Boalkhali

A mobile court has sentenced a farmer to seven days’ imprisonment and fined him Tk 20,000 for destroying the nests, chicks and eggs of weaver birds in Boalkhali upazila of Chattogram.

The convict, Bacha Mia, 48, is a resident of Popadia in Boalkhali upazila.

The drive was conducted in Popadia area yesterday by Boalkhali Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate Mehedi Hasan Faruk.

Confirming the incident, the UNO said the drive was carried out following complaints from local environmental and wildlife conservation activists.

“Upon visiting the site, we found 29 dead chicks and several broken eggs,” he said.

He added that the accused confessed to the offence, claiming the birds had been eating paddy from his field.

The magistrate said Bacha Mia was punished under Section 38 of the Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act, 2013 and sent to jail.
