Madrasa principal held over sexual assault of student

Police have arrested the principal of a madrasa in Lakshmipur’s Chandraganj upazila on allegations of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old student.

The accused, Abdul Ahad, 46, principal of Popular Ideal Hifz Madrasa in the Dighli Rastar Matha area under Mandari union, was detained from the institution on Sunday night and was formally shown arrested in a case filed by the victim’s mother, Chandraganj Police Station OC Md Abdur said yesterday.

“He was produced before the court, where the judge ordered to send him to jail following a hearing. An investigation into the incident is ongoing. The child has been sent to the hospital for a medical examination,” he added.

According to police and the case statement, Ahad called the student to his room on Saturday (July 18) night and allegedly assaulted him. The following afternoon, the boy fled the madrasa and returned home.

The child told his mother that the teacher had abused him and refused to return to the institution.

The mother subsequently brought the matter to the attention of locals, following which guardians and residents went to the madrasa, detained the accused, and handed him over to police.
