Rab re-arrests accused in 32 cases a day after court lock-up escape
The Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) has re-arrested Md Samrat Mondol, 28, an accused in 32 criminal cases, less than 24 hours after he escaped from the reception desk of the Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Court police lock-up.
He was arrested in a joint operation in the Kashar area under Mymensingh Kotwali Police Station early today.
The operation was carried out jointly by Rab-1, CPSC, Gazipur, and Rab-14, CPSC, Mymensingh, based on intelligence gathered by the Rab Headquarters Intelligence Branch and other sources.
According to Rab, several accused were lined up beside the reception desk of the GMP Court Police Lock-up in East Joydebpur under Gazipur Sadar Police Station around 2:00pm yesterday. At that time, Samrat, son of Dulal Mondol of Taktapara in Jamalpur's Madarganj upazila, who currently lives in Kolmeshwar under Gacha in Gazipur, slipped one hand out of his handcuffs and fled the premises.
Following the incident, Sub-Inspector Manjurul Islam of Gazipur Sadar Police Station filed a case under Section 224 of the Penal Code the same day.
Rab said Samrat had originally been arrested around 9:00pm on July 19 from an eight-storey rented building owned by Ibrahim at Chowdhury Market in Khunia Madhyapara under Gacha Police Station, following a requisition from GMP Sadar Police Station.
During that operation, three others -- Alamin Islam, 38, Shahidul alias Monsur, 40, and Amin Mia, 28 -- were also arrested and later handed over to the respective police stations.
After his latest arrest, Samrat was handed over to Gazipur Sadar Police Station for further interrogation and legal proceedings.
Captain Iftekhar Ahmed, company commander of the Specialised Company of Rab-1, confirmed the matter to The Daily Star this morning.
