Regent Group Chairman Shahed Karim held after public detention

Mohammad Shahed Karim, chairman of Regent Group, was taken into police custody in the capital today after being detained by a group of people in the ECB Chattar area.

The incident took place around noon.

Confirming the development to The Daily Star, Rakibul Hasan, officer-in-charge of Cantonment Police Station, said police responded after receiving information about a commotion at the spot.

"A group of people had detained him. Police went to the scene after receiving information about the incident and took him into custody," the OC said.

He said there is a case against Shahed with the Pallabi Police Station.

"If Pallabi Police Station sends a requisition, we will show him arrested in that case," Rakibul added.

Shahed was released from Dhaka Central Jail in September 2024 after securing bail in 96 cases filed against him.

Earlier, he was arrested by the Rab from Satkhira on July 15, 2020, while allegedly attempting to cross the border into India illegally. At the time of his arrest, he was disguised in a burqa.

His arrest brought to light a series of allegations of fraud and financial irregularities. The most notorious allegations involved Regent Hospital, owned by his Regent Group, which was accused of issuing thousands of fake Covid-19 test certificates and charging patients for tests and treatment in violation of its agreement with the government.
