Woman found dead in Jhenaidah; son detained over suspected killing

Police recovered the body of a 55-year-old woman from Maheshpur upazila in Jhenaidah this morning, while locals handed her son over to police over allegations that he killed her.

The deceased, Sakher Banu, was the wife of the late Jeker Ali of Paschimpara in Shyamakur village. Maheshpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mehedi Hasan told The Daily Star that the killing is believed to have taken place sometime last night.

Police detained her son, Ekhlachur Rahman, 34, and are questioning him after locals handed him over, the OC added.

“The body has been recovered, and preparations are underway to send it to Jhenaidah 250-bed General Hospital for an autopsy after completing the inquest examination,” he said.

Local resident Jamirul Haque said Sakher Banu’s husband, Jeker Ali, died about five years ago. Since then, their son had become addicted to drugs.

He frequently quarrelled with his mother over money for drugs and various other reasons, Jamirul said.

He allegedly slaughtered his mother sometime last night; villagers detained him in the morning and handed him over to police, he added.
