Prolonged war could force subsidy rethink, says Zahed Ur Rahman

Fuel prices may need to be adjusted if ongoing tensions surrounding the impasse around the Persian Gulf persist, the prime minister’s adviser for information and broadcasting, Dr Zahed Ur Rahman, said today.

“If the war continues for long, the overall situation will indeed deteriorate. In such a scenario, it becomes difficult to maintain subsidies for an extended period,” he said while speaking at a weekly press briefing at the Press Information Department at the Secretariat.

He noted that the government had already decided not to raise fuel prices in April, but cautioned that continued instability could necessitate revisions.

“We have already stated that we will not increase prices in April. However, if this continues, some price adjustments may be required,” he said.

“Donald Trump is not very predictable. If a successful discussion takes place and a deal is reached, everything could stabilise,” he added.

During the briefing, Zahed Ur Rahman also briefed journalists on the ongoing activities of various ministries.
