Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Md Abdus Salam today said 300,000 trees will be planted over the next five years within areas under the city corporation.

The DSCC administrator made the statement this morning while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of a tree‑planting programme in the residential area of the University of Dhaka.

“There is no alternative to tree plantation to save lives. Therefore, the prime minister’s nationwide tree plantation programme must be turned into a mass movement,” the administrator said.

He also said that in line with the prime minister’s initiative, a plan has been adopted to plant a total of 300,000 trees from 2026 to 2030. On average, about 60,000 trees will be planted each year.

To achieve this ambitious target, DSCC has taken the initiative to establish a modern nursery under its own management, said Abdus Salam.

Additionally, under an agreement with the Forest Department, a “Zero Soil” project will be implemented, which will make it possible to cover road medians and dividers with greenery, he added.

Highlighting the importance of public awareness, the administrator said, “If citizens are aware, 50 percent of the city corporation’s work becomes easier. We will complete the remaining 50 percent.”

The event was attended by DU Vice-Chancellor Professor ABM Obaidul Islam as a special guest. Alongside inaugurating the tree plantation programme, the administrator also launched a freelancing training programme for students.
