Govt holding off on fuel price hike considering public hardship: PM
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today said that although many countries have raised fuel prices, Bangladesh has so far refrained from doing so, considering the hardship such a move would cause the public.
He made the remark while addressing the Independence Award-2026 ceremony at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka.
“Even though fuel prices have gone up across the globe, we have not taken this decision yet. The government is sincerely trying to maintain stability, even if it requires providing subsidies worth hundreds of crores of taka daily in this sector,” the prime minister said.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to fulfilling promises, he said, “We have already started implementing the pledges made to the people. Every clause and every promise in the party manifesto and the signed July Charter will be implemented.”
The prime minister said the government is making every possible effort to safeguard public welfare, stressing that it was elected by the people and remains accountable to them.
