50 injured as Argentina, Brazil supporters clash in Habiganj village
At least 50 people were injured in a clash between supporters of Argentina and Brazil following a football match in Habiganj Sadar upazila this morning.
The incident took place in Kashipur village under Lokra union and originated from a dispute over the outcome of a friendly match played between two groups of local youths yesterday afternoon, said police.
Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Jahidul Haque said the match ended with the Argentina supporting team defeating the Brazil supporting team by 2-0. Tension reportedly emerged when the result was announced over a microphone by the commentator, triggering an argument between supporters of the two sides. Although the matter was initially settled, the dispute resurfaced this morning.
Around 50 people, including men and women, were injured. They were rescued and taken to Habiganj Sadar Hospital for treatment, the OC added.
Several critically injured individuals were later referred to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. The situation in the area is now under control.
Locals said supporters of both groups were involved in another verbal altercation today, which eventually escalated into a clash with locally made weapons used during the confrontation.
