Vow to bring war criminals to book

Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) at a meeting yesterday vowed to bring the war criminals to justice if AL-led 14-party combine and LDP together are voted to power in the forthcoming general election.

LDP Executive President Col (retd) Oli Ahmed strongly criticised the BNP, saying that it has rewarded the Jamaat leaders who were collaborators of the Pakistani army during the War of Liberation.

Bangladesh is not safe under the leadership of Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman, he added.

LDP organised the meting at a community centre at Mohakhali in the city to mark the Martyred Intellectuals' Day.

Around 500 activists and leaders of BNP and its front organisations joined the LDP at the programme. Former assistant secretary general of the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) Arshaduzzaman also joined LDP in the meeting.

Speaking at the meeting, LDP President AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury said the High Court verdict in a case against former president HM Ershad, which came all of a sudden, has raised many questions.

Politicians are now being killed in the 'crossfire of law', he added.

He also demanded that the election date be deferred by a month.

Badruddoza also criticised the president/chief adviser over the resignation of Sonali Bank chairman. The caretaker government wanted to transfer the chairman because the bank did not approve a loan proposal of the president's son, he alleged.

LDP Secretary General Maj (retd) MA Mannan, Jahanara Begum and Arshaduzzaman also spoke.
