Constitutional provision ignored for years
The provision of the constitution, which calls for the separation of judiciary, has been ignored for years, he said at the Second Litterateur M Ibrahim Memorial Lecture on the Dhaka University campus.
The Centre for Studies in Social Transformation organised the memorial lecture entitled 'Pro-people judicial system for the common people of Bangladesh', with its President Prof Serajul Islam Chowdhury in the chair.
Justice Rabbani said the number of cases is increasing day by day due to growing social, political and economic instability and personal feuds.
As a huge number of cases remain pending, it takes a long time to dispose of a case, he said, adding that as a result, common people find it very difficult to take a case to higher court.
He also said the people involved in cases face much harassment as many laws are inherited from colonial regime.
At the beginning of the programme, Coordinator of the Centre M Inamul Haq gave a brief description of the life and works of litterateur M Ibrahim.
