Joint forces arrested 13 students, including two Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leaders and two Islamic Chhatra Shibir (ICS) activists during their raids on different student halls of Rajshahi University (RU) on Sunday night.

The raids were carried out after being tipped off that the arrested students were planning to violate the state of emergency.

The arrestees are Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall JCD Joint Convener Mukibul Hassan Mukut, 4th year student of Anthropology, Bangabandhu Hall JCD Joint Convener Mamunur Rashid, 4th year student of Library and Information Science, Bangabandhu Hall Shibir activists Abdul Halim, 3rd year student of Chemistry, and Abdur Rahman, 2nd year student of Information and Communication System.

Others arrested from Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall are Nazim Uddin, masters student of Geography, Muktadir Rahman, 4th year student of Statistics, Shah Alam, masters student of Accounting and Information System, Shariful Alam, 4th year student of Statistics, and Shahadat Hossain, 2nd year student of Geography.

The joint forces also arrested four other students from Bangabandhu Hall. They are Raisul Kabir, masters student of English, Shahidul Islam, 4th year student of Psychology, Sanjoy Kumar, masters student of Language and Abu Jar Gifari, 1st year student of History.

A teacher of Bangabandhu Hall said some general students were arrested only for interrogation, because many of them had no legal document for staying in the hall.

The joint forces led by army Major Zaman and Rab Major Kabir raided the Shibir-dominated halls at midnight.

During the raid, Rajshahi DC of Police (East) Nazmul Karim, DC of Police (West) Mahbubur Rahman, university proctor and senior teachers of respective halls were present.

Fearing further raid, many resident students of different dormitories have left the campus.

Sources said recently some JCD activists brought out a procession on the campus and chanted slogans against the caretaker government and in favour of former prime minister Khaleda Zia and her son Tarique Rahman.

Some Shibir workers also recently distributed leaflets on the campus criticising the caretaker government.

When contacted, Duty Officer of Motiher Police Station ASI Aminul told this correspondent that they would release nine general students after interrogation.

But JCD and ICS activists would not be released as there are specific allegations against them, he added.

When contacted, Proctor Enamul Haque confirmed the raid.
