Alak Roy

You can't think of the Bangladeshi art scene without thinking of Alak Roy. One of the most renowned sculptors of the country, Roy showed promise from a very young age, receiving the Best Sculpture award in 1979 at the Young Artists Exhibition organised by the Shilpakala Academy. He was honoured at the Contest for Landscape Sculpture held in China in 2008, and was awarded the grand prize at the 4th Asian Art Biennale held in Bangladesh. The eminent artist and sculptor talks about his most recent project and much more with the Star.

Favourite Medium of Work
I love working with terracotta and ceramic. Terracotta gives me the essence of working closely with our heritage.

Your Mentor
Professor K G  Subramaniam. I worked under him for two years but spoke to him only once. That one meeting inspired me to pursue my career as a sculptor.

Most significant Achievement
I participated at the exhibition 'Legacy of Ceramic Art' hosted by the Museum of Modern Ceramic Art in Gifu, Japan. The museum later stored my sculpture for permanent exhibition.

An Exhibition That's Stayed with You
A solo exhibition called 'Ecology of the Mind,' which was sponsored by Bengal Foundation and the British Council on the eve of the 'Year of Sculpture' organised by the United Nations.

Your Latest Project
I recently completed a sculpture made of steel and stone for the sculpture section of the Andres Institute of Art in New Hampshire, USA.

A Dream Yet to Be Fulfilled
I want to set a park devoted to sculptures in Bangladesh. In countries abroad, this idea of a sculpture park is extremely popular. I will be retiring next year, so I hope to start work on it then.
