Farzana Wahid, more popularly known as Shayan, is equally passionate about human rights issues as she is about her music. While her unusual look has achieved a somewhat iconic status amongst fans and music lovers, her unique approach extends to the way she perceives the world and the society. She says that music is her catharsis and that's evident in her music that has a cleansing effect on the audience. The Star speaks to this creative talent about her significant achievements, her inspiration and much more.
First Guru
I am a self-taught singer, but in my childhood I used to sit by my mother and would listen to her sing. Other than that, if I have to mention one name that has influenced my musical entity in multiple ways and that is Shahnaz Rahmatullah.
Inspiration
Every situation I have a hard time dealing with, leads me to write a new song. Whenever I have a pain I cannot resolve or a crisis I cannot deal with, I try to get those thoughts out of my head onto a piece of paper and then I put music to the words. I believe my life has been the greatest inspiration to write songs.
Significant achievement
That fact that I have found music as my refuge is the biggest achievement in my life. It helps me heal, makes me move on; in fact it keeps me attached to my life.
Ongoing project
I am in the process of releasing two albums, one is on social issues whereas the other is going to be a compilation of a number of romantic songs.
If you could change one thing about Dhaka
I would encourage everyone to be more considerate to our environment. I would make it mandatory for people to pick up any trash that they see lying around them.
