Nine villagers Gunned down in 'lawless' Bihar

AFP, Patna
At least nine Indian villagers, including two children, were gunned down in their homes Saturday in India's lawless eastern state of Bihar, police said.

Unidentified gunmen opened fire on the villagers, who were from India's lower castes, before dawn in Siwan district, 170 kilometres (105 miles) northeast of the state capital Patna, police said.

"The cause for the massacre can not be ascertained yet. We are awaiting more details," police superintendent Jaglal Chowdhary told AFP.

Police sources said the motive could have been political rivalry.

Bihar is notorious for political murders and caste killings.
