Delhi keen on barring 'tainted Leaders' from polls: Patil

Keen on debarring "criminally inclined" persons from contesting elections, the Government is contemplating convening an all-party meeting to reach a consensus on the matter.

"Our intention is to see that criminally inclined persons should not be allowed to contest elections. But in what fashion that has to be done has to be decided by all of us together," Home Minister Shivraj Patil said on Sunday.

Asked whether Government proposes to convene an all-party meeting on the Election Commission's suggestions on electoral reforms, he said, "Of course. We cannot take a decision on our own without consulting others."

Going into the complexities of the problem and the practical difficulties in carrying out EC's suggestions, he said, "Unless we develop a consensus, it is not going to happen."

"These things, you know, are different aspects which have to be considered very carefully, not only by the ruling party but all other parties," Patil said.
