Five killed in violence torn Indian Kashmir

Suspected Islamic militants killed four members of a Muslim family in Indian Kashmir yesterday while police shot dead a top rebel allegedly implicated in the killing of 25 people, officers said.

Ghulam Hussain, his two sons and a daughter were killed when suspected rebels barged into their house in Malan village in southern Udhampur district and sprayed them with bullets, a police spokesman said.

Hussain was targetted as he was suspected of working with Indian security personnel, he said.

Police meanwhile killed top rebel Tala Afaqui in a clash in Rajouri district, about 160 kilometres (100 miles) northwest of Kashmir's winter capital Jammu early yesterday, said Deputy Inspector General of police S.M. Sahai.
