3 US soldiers killed, 14 injured in Afghanistan

Three US soldiers were killed and 14 wounded in a series of hit-and-run attacks by Taliban militants in one of the worst days for US forces since they arrived here in 2001, the US military said Wednesday.

Confirming two US deaths reported on Monday, spokesman Major Scott Nelson said another American soldier also died the same day in fighting which saw eight separate attacks by militants on US and Afghan forces.

He said 14 US soldiers and six members of the fledgling Afghan national army were injured in the fighting. Nine insurgents were killed and one Afghan soldier was missing.

"We have had an unfortunate day," Nelson told AFP.

The attacks in the provinces of Khost, Paktika, Uruzgan and Zabul marked one of the bloodiest days for the US military in Afghanistan since its campaign against Al-Qaeda and the Taliban began in late 2001.
