None of abducted 12 freed in Rangamati

Ranagamati Police Superintendent-in-Charge Khospul Alam told this correspondent at about 2:30 pm yesterday that police and army have jointly launched a rescue operation.

Armed criminals allegedly belong to the anti-peace organisation United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF) are blamed for the abduction.

Those abducted are known to be supporters of PCJSS (Parbattya Chattagram Jano Sanghaty Samity), which signed a peace accord with the then Awami League government in 1997.

Sources said about 20 armed men raided the Alotila village at around midnight Sunday night and took 12 people away at gunpoint.

They are Kalachan Chakma, 65, Durbasha Moni Chakma, 60, Bolmoni Chakma, 40, Krishna Chakma, 42 Kripamoy Chakma, 25, Pathopmoni Chakma, 50, Liton Chakma, Lakshimoy Chakma, 28, Chuchangla Chakma, 55, Shantimoy Chakma, 50, Dangacheda Chakma, 18, and Rotan Chakma, 28.

The sources said the incident could be a sequel to the rivalry between UPDF and PCJSS.

Due to the rivalry, 48 people were abducted from March 22 to April 17. Twenty of them were freed, according sources.
