JCD activist dies in custody

A Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) activist of Bauphal upazila and an under-trial prisoner died at Patuakhali General Hospital following alleged torture by police and party rivals on Wednesday night.

The victim, Ramjan Ali alias Shakil, 24, was an accused in a case of lifting a motorbike at Bauphal Police Station (PS).

According to sources in Bauphal PS, party rivals caught and tortured Shakil at village Indrukul before sending him to the police station on April 15. The same day police sent him to local upazila health complex for treatment. Police sent him to the magistrate's court after his discharge from the hospital on April 17. From there he was sent to jail hazat. The jail authorities sent him to the general hospital at noon on Wednesday where he died at about 8 pm.

The same day the victim's mother Shahida Begum filed a case with Bauphal PS. She alleged that her son had been caught by party rivals from a meeting held at local Akbaria Senior Madrasa field. He sustained serious injury after they beat him with lethal weapons. They handed him over to police.

Police also tortured him at the hazat, the victim's mother claimed.
