Vow to root out acid violence

They vowed to launch a movement against the heinous crime that destroys lives of victims, most of whom are young girls.

Representatives of all classes of people irrespective of political opinions expressed their resolve at a view exchange meeting on ways to eradicate acid violence. It was organised jointly by Action Aid Bangladesh and a local NGO-- Sodesh (Society for Development and Education for Small Households).

It was held at Agardari Union Parishad auditorium with Agardari UP Chairman Abdur Rahaman in the chair. Itv was addressed by Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) SM Ashrafuzzaman, Sodesh's Executive Director Madhab Dutta, Gopal Chandra Ghosal.

The UNO asked acid sellers to record names and addresses of buyers to help probe into incidents of acid violence and warned of action for non-compliance. Other speakers called for creating public awareness and enactment of tougher law to bring the culprits to book.

At least 22 people including women and teenage girls fell victims to acid violence in Satkhira in 2004.

Government officials, UP members, members of civil societies, acid sellers and users (goldsmiths), members of a local Women and Children Repression Resistance Committee, teachers, students, religious leaders and NGO representatives attended the meeting.
