Abbas delays election
Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas yesterday postponed legislative elections set for July 17, provoking a furious reaction from the radical Islamist group Hamas, which hoped to score a major success in the polls.
Abbas "decided to annul the previous decree fixing July 17 as the election date," said an official statement from the Palestinian Authority.
"A new date will be set by decree following consultations with the different Palestinian movements and the adoption of a new election law by the Palestinian legislative council," it said.
