Khulna cops on high alert

Security forces on duty in front of the Press Club and local newspaper offices were directed to remain on high alert. In addition, security measures have been stepped up in all key installations in the city.

Khulna city will remain on 'red alert' until further order, said a senior official of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) yesterday.

Meanwhile, other sources said, higher authorities in the government asked senior police officials in south-western region about progress made in investigation of journalist murder cases.

Three prominent journalists were killed in Khulna city in last 18 months.

Manik Saha, BBC reporter and Khulna Correspondent of the New Age was killed in a bomb attack near Khulna Press Club on January 15 last year.

Humayun Kabir Balu, editor of Dainik Janmabhumi, was killed in bomb attack on June 27 last yea in front of his office-cum-residence at Haji Ismail Road in the city.

Shaikh Belaluddin, Khulna Bureau Chief of Dainik Sangram, was killed in a bomb attack on the night of February 5 on the Press Club compound.

Dip Azad, Khulna Bureau Chief of Dainik Jugantar, survived three bomb attacks in January this year.

There has not any breakthrough in investigation of the cases as the masterminds could not be tracked down.
