Shop owners down shutters to protest salt seizure

Grocers and wholesalers in Gaibandha town kept their shops closed yesterday protesting seizure of 1000 bags of non-iodised Indian salt from some shops on Saturday.

They also brought out a procession in the town.

On Saturday, a team led by Magistrate Masudul Hoque and comprising BSCIC Assistant General Manager Altaf Hossain and iodine experts raided retail and wholesale salt markets and seized 1000 bags of non-iodis Indian salt worth about Tk eight lakh from 15 shops. They dumped the salt into Ghagot river.

The incident was also protested at a meeting held at Gaibandha Public Library hall, attended by, among others, district Awami League President Mohammed Khaled, Workers Party Secretary Aminul Islam Golap, Jatiya Party President Abdur Rashid Sarker, JSD President Shah Sariful Islam Bablu, and Gaibandha Press Club Secretary Abu Zafor Sabu.
