A brief description of Assassins

The assassins in League of Legends have always been subject to a lot of controversy about their balance. For example, newbies rage about how they got “one-shot” while being totally ignorant of the fact that they were being complacent of their positioning as a fragile marksman. However, not all of these quibbles are baseless. Assassins are supposed to be true to their “feast or famine” archetype but there are certain champions in league who are far less likely to experience “famine” due to their low item requirement and high base damage values. Champions like Kha'Zix can do tons of damage while building only cheap armor penetration items. Thus Riot has struggled, throughout seasons, in bringing perfect balance to this class.
An assassin's role is simple: “Kill the high value target”. However, there are different kinds of assassins in the game. The high single target damage dealers like Rengar and Zed excel at killing the target they mark for death. They can achieve this with their ultimates which help them in carrying out their task. Unfortunately, this is also their drawback as they face the risk of “putting all their eggs in one basket”; so should they fail in their attempted assassination, they will remain relatively useless until their ultimates come off of cooldown
Other assassins like LeBlanc and Fizz have low cooldown, high damage dealing spells along with several tools for disengaging after things get too hairy. These two champions are considered some of the safest picks in mid lane because of the plethora of escapes they possess. They also require very little items to be successful and can snowball really hard in lane should their opponent allow them even an inch of space.
Akali and Diana fit the role of “chaser-assassins” who are adept at mopping up targets after the middle or the end of a teamfight. They require patience and extensive knowledge of which target to eliminate first as they can be easily ganged up on and killed outright.
Then there are the reset assassins Kha'Zix and Katarina. Two of the hardest snowballing champions in the game. Both of their abilities bear similarities to all the types of assassins mentioned. Kha'Zix being more of the safe type while Katarina can be an area of effect damage monster if left unchecked. But what sets these two apart from the rest of the pack is that they have a mechanic that allows them to ignore the cooldown of their spells once they gain a kill or assist. That mechanic is the reset. Thus these champions also excel at mopping up while retaining the ability to 100 to 0 a lot of champions.
The last type of assassin is a unique one. They are they melee carry assassins who scale hard on critical strike chance. Examples of this class are Yasuo and Master Yi. Both of these champions are relatively squishy yet they possess unique traits which help them survive. Master Yi cannot be affected by movement impairing spells while Yasuo gains a high value shield and has a wall that can block any projectile in the game (OP much?). These two are the gods of late game. They will exterminate anyone they find in their path with extreme prejudice. However they require a lot of farm and kills in order to hit that late game monster stage.
So I hope you summoners now have a general idea of the purpose and role of the various assassins of League of Legends. Stay safe, ward your lanes and stay close to your team; lest you get burst down by a merciless killing machine in the blink of an eye.
