Attainable Resolutions for 2014

Attainable Resolutions for 2014

Arman R. Khan

At the beginning of every year, we get busy making a list of things we'd like to do or achieve in that year. Most of the time, we can't stick to the resolutions; sometimes because the resolutions aren't realistic enough, or maybe because we don't make the resolutions from the heart. But there are people who do manage to keep their resolutions. And no, “I will start dating someone” is not one of those.
We asked around to see what sort of resolutions people are coming up with this year, and below are some that stood out as plausible ones.
“Cut down my weight.” – Taki Uddin, 20
“Build a better body.” – Akib Haider, 22
Author's comment:
After about a month or so of being stuck at home due to the blockades and strikes, I wouldn't be surprised if most of you had put on some weight. Hoping 2014 doesn't bring us any more forced “holidays”, hit the gym or go for a run every now and then. This would be a good year to lose those extra kilos and become physically fit.
“I'll finish the free course on Rock History that I'm doing online on Coursera.” – Shamsil Kamal, 18
Author's comment:
Learning something new and something different is always a great idea, especially if these are properly structured courses conducted by instructors from some of the top universities across the globe. Online. For free. How cool is that? There are many sites, like Coursera, that offer free online courses throughout the year on a diverse range of subjects. You have nothing to lose, and only knowledge to gain.
“Open the first complete online freelancing agency in Bangladesh.” – Sifat Siddique, 20
Author's comment:
Entrepreneurship among youngsters, although not abundant, is blooming. And thanks to Facebook, these start-ups have found ground to thrive on. Starting from online clothing stores and dessert shops to home delivery services by third parties, Bangladesh is seeing new and innovative business ideas put into action by the Facebook generation. It would be a good idea to explore and plan your project this year.
“Publish at least one essay or story somewhere, so that it can be read by a significant number of people.” – Nifath Karim Chowdhury, 22
Author's comment:
It's true that there are not ample platforms for budding writers in Bangladesh. Yet, in recent times, writers have started gaining exposure using the internet. In 2014, therefore, I hope a lot of writers would take their passion to the next level and be read by a sizeable readership.
“Make Rantages a 'clean' humour portal that you can visit with your family and laugh together while creating valuable memories with your loved ones.” – TehGoatLord, 5
Author's comment:
Umm…I'm in no position to comment on that, but I hope so too!
“I'll enjoy 2014, with no regret.” – Aawatef Rahman Khan, 19
Author's comment:
Albeit this being a done-to-death resolution, many people do indeed enjoy themselves, and live with no regret. #yolo. The key here is to not over think every single thing you do. Do what you would like to do. Don't let your past or future mess up your present.
“Maybe visit 10-12 of the 64 districts. I have already covered 34.” – Gulshan Ara Zobaida, 18
Author's comment:
I'm one to plan trips, but seldom find time to actually execute them, and I'm sure there are many like me. I suggest you do explore our beautiful country as much as possible this year, as I intend to.
See, folks, making the resolution is the easiest bit. Sticking to it is difficult. This year, think before you make resolutions, and ensure they are attainable ones that you can follow through for the 365 days to come, and even after that.
