The Supreme Court has issued 12 observations and guidelines for the Anti-Corruption Commission over terminating officials without showing any reason under the relevant rule.

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has been facing an acute shortage of judges, as no new one was appointed after December 8 last year.

The coronavirus outbreak has caused an unusual delay for the High Court to start hearing on the sensational August 21 grenade attack cases although it has accepted the appeals of the convicted accused more than 15 months back.

There are currently 36 lakh pending cases with courts across the country. In light of this huge backlog, Law Minister Anisul Huq stated earlier this year that the government will take initiatives to clear at least five to six lakh of these cases within 2020.

A judicial probe has found five police officials, including three additional superintendents of Rajshahi police, responsible in the manipulation of the first information report (FIR) of workers’ leader Nurul Islam murder case in June this year.

A total of 166 new judges for the lower courts are likely to be appointed this month, sources in the law ministry and Bangladesh Judicial Service Commission (BJSC) said.
