Man killed in ‘gunfight’
A suspected robber was killed in a “gunfight” with police in Pabna’s Sujanagar upazila early yesterday.
The dead, Saiful Islam Geda alias Gedalal, 30, of Narashinghapur village in Sujanagar, was arrested a day before he was killed. He had at least five robbery cases filed against him, police said.
Arbinda Sarkar, officer-in-charge of Sujanagar Police Station, claimed a police team, along with Gedalal, conducted a raid in Hasampur field area around 2:30am to recover firearms.
Sensing their presence, Gedalal’s cohorts opened fire, forcing the law enforcers to retaliate. At one point of the “gunfight”, Gedalal sustained bullet injuries. Police rushed him to Sujanagar Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead, the OC added.
Later, the body was handed over to family members after conducting an autopsy at Pabna General Hospital.
Police also claimed to have recovered a gun, two bullets and a few firearms.
The Daily Star, however, could not independently verify the police claims.
Four policemen were also injured in the “gunfight”.
