Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) Chittagong district yesterday pressed charges against 29 Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists of Chittagong University (CU) in a case filed in connection with killing of a CU student--Taposh Sarkar--on December 14, 2014.

PBI Inspector Mustafizur Rahman, also the case investigation officer, submitted the charge sheet before Chittagong Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court.

In the charge sheet, BCL CU unit's former Cultural Secretary Ashrafuzzaman Asha's name has been mentioned as the prime accused.

According to the ballistic experts' report, Taposh was killed by a 7.68 caliber pistol, said the IO, adding that only one bullet was used in the killing and Asha was carrying the pistol.

Asha shot Taposh, who was standing on the balcony of the second-floor of Shah Amanat Hall, from the ground, he said, adding, the killing occurred over previous enmity.

BCL activists Rubel Dey, Sharid Shuvo and Pradip Chakrabarty were shown accused for attempting to murder while 25 others were shown accused for holding illegal procession and pelting brickbats.

Another FIR accused Rupam Biswas's name was dropped as he was in India during the incident. Thirty two others were shown as witnesses.

Taposh Sarkar, a first year student of Sanskrit department, was shot dead centring a factional clash between two BCL groups, Varsity Express and Choose Friends with Care, over establishing domination on the campus, different dormitories and the university's shuttle train.

Taposh's friend Hafijul Islam filed the case against 45 BCL activists.

On August 5, 2015, the case was transferred to PBI.

Police arrested 15 accused and all of them were freed on bail while 14 are now fugitives.
