Registration opens for British Council's Book Reading Competition
The British Council and Daffodil Education Network (DEN) are going to organise Nationwide Book Reading Competition to celebrate the Word Book Day in Bangladesh. This competition is designed to promote reading habit among the children and adults and to provide pleasure through reading. Participant will have to read a book given by the British Council and need to attend an assessment test at the end. Last year, 51 participants from all four groups won prizes, and the top winners from each group received a laptop.
Interested participants can collect a book from British Council Registration Point, at the end of the reading there will be an assessment test. The book is written in easy English and the story is enjoyable for all levels of readers. Participants need not to refund the book after reading.
The registration started from April 1 and will close on May 31. Any student (above class VI) and adult can participate in the competition. Detail information and registration option is available at this website www.readingbd.org. Registration can also be done from all British Council Offices, Daffodil Education Network (DEN) and a number of other points throughout the country. Participants need to fill in the registration form with two passport sized photographs and registration fee isTk.400/- (non- refundable).

Environmental Science Colloquium at IUB
Department of Environmental Science of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) organised a day-long environmental science colloquium titled “Scientific Thinking towards Sustainable Development” on March 27. The main objective of this programme was to promote environmental science education at university level. Dr Abdul Khaleque, Assistant Professor of IUB, introduced the participants and urged the students to study environmental science to find out solutions to the emerging environmental problems we are facing today.
The colloquium was inaugurated by Professor M Ali Hossain, Dean, School of Environmental Science and Management of IUB. In his speech Professor Hossain emphasised the importance of such an event and encouraged the students. In the key-note address, Dr Zainal Abedin focused on job opportunities for environmental science graduates. Dr Tanvir A Khan, Registrar of IUB, also spoke on the occasion and discussed the importance of studying environmental science.
A total of four hundred students in sixty two groups participated in the project based poster exhibition. Professor M Omar Rahman, Vice Chancellor of IUB, distributed prizes among top ten groups for their poster presentation and congratulated the winners.
The Daily Star and GP jointly launch IGNITE to inspire science education

IGNITE is a joint initiative of Grameenphone and The Daily Star to inspire school students -- from Class VI to Class X -- to be more interested in science education through quiz competitions, different projects and idea-based competitions and activities. With the slogan 'Science for the Internet Generation', this project will have its vibrant presence in Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions. Students from these three divisions can register at www.ignite-bd.com.
At the initial stage, school level activation will be held in 75 selected schools in the three divisions with knowledge sharing and demonstrations to motivate students in different branches of science. The selected schools will be receiving 10 complementary copies of The Daily Star once a week during this three-month project. Competitions will be held in three different categories: 'Discover Science' for students of class VI to VIII, 'Idea Flight' for students of Class VI to VIII and Class IX to X, and 'Imagine the Future' for students of class IX and X. There will be a divisional level competition followed by a national round where students will compete to grab the best science competitor recognition.
Through this project both GP and The Daily Star will reach out to over two lakh secondary school students and more than two thousand school teachers.
Free Cleft lips Operation Camp at East West Medical College
Sixty-three patients with cleft lips or palates, aged between 2 months to 55 years, can now smile, after they came under the scalpel of renowned oral and maxillofacial & plastic surgeons at a six-day free campaign held at East West Medical College Hospital. The campaign was facilitated by Rutgers University, USA; Smile Bangladesh (US based non government organisation); East West Medical College & Update Dental College Hospital.
A team of 14 specialists, including oral and maxillofacial surgeons, plastic surgeons, nurses and an administrator from the US, conducted the camp. Professor Dr. Shahid R Aziz, Professor, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, USA was the team leader.
Present there, Dr. Md. Moazzem Hossain, Chairman of East West Medical College & Update Dental College said “We are committed to provide better medical services and that is why we tied up with Rutgers University and Smile Bangladesh to make a specialised cleft centre in the medical college.”
Seminar on Career Counselling at UIU
A seminar on 'Career Counselling Session' took place at United International University (UIU) on March 30. Professor Dr. Chowdhury Mofizur Rahman, Pro-Vice Chancellor of UIU, presided over the programme. Monami Haque, Assistant General Manager, HRD, Square Toiletries Ltd. was present as chief guest and Jesmin Zaman, Manager, Marketing, Square Toiletries Ltd. was present as special guest at the seminar.
Speakers focused on different aspects of recruitment and selection process of Square Toiletries Ltd. and Square Group of Industries. From CV writing to interview techniques and many other issues were discussed at the session. The speakers also advised the students to be more attentive to their academic studies to face the challenges of present job market.
