Showcasing Nobel Prizes in Literature at ULAB

The wonderful world of Nobel Prizes in Literature was highlighted at a daylong talk and exhibition held at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) on December 13, 2013. The event was organised by the Department of English and Humanities (DEH) of ULAB to mark 100 years of Tagore's Nobel Prize win. Heather Cruden, Canadian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, inaugurated the exhibition featuring the life and works of 106 Nobel laureates from all over the world. Dr. Kazi Anis Ahmed, Vice President, ULAB Board of Trustees, in his speech encouraged young writers to come forward and write in English to make their presence visible on the global platform. The highlight of the day was the launch of Tagore's “Gitanjali” edited by Professor Emeritus Rafiqul Islam. Chairman of the English Department, Professor Kaiser Huq and ULAB Vice Chancellor, Professor Imran Rahman, also spoke on the occasion.

Seminar at ASA University 

Applied Sociology Department of ASA University Bangladesh and Lions Clubs International jointly organised a seminar and human chain at ASA University campus to mark World AIDS Day on December 1, 2013. Professor Dr. Dalem Chandra Barman, Vice Chancellor of the university, was present as chief guest at the seminar. Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Bari, Chairman of Public Health Department, discussed the present situation of HIV/AIDS around the world. Dr. Ahsun Habib, Chairman, Department of Applied Sociology, ASAUB, and Tazima Hossain Mojumder, Development Organiser, The Hunger Project, spoke at the seminar. Shahjahan Bhuiya, Additional Director of ASAUB, gave the vote of thanks at the end of the seminar.

Seminar at Daffodil International University 

Department of Law of Daffodil International University (DIU) organised a seminar, titled “Urban crimes in Dhaka: An analysis of spatial pattern and trend”, on December 10, 2013 at DIU auditorium. Professor Dr. M. Lutfar Rahman, Vice Chancellor of the university, was present as chief guest, while Professor Dr. M. Zakir Hossain, Director (Studies) of DIU, was present as special guest at the seminar. Farhana Helal Mehtab, Head of Law Department, presided over the seminar, and Mohammad Motiar Rahman, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Crime), presented the keynote paper. Speakers at the seminar stressed on the need for moral education and social values to groom youngsters for a crime and corruption free Bangladesh.

NSU and USAID sign MoU

Department of Public Health of North South University (NSU) and USAID signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on December 13, 2013 to ensure expertise in the field of public health. As per the MoU, nine students from the Public Health Department of NSU have been awarded fellowship at the initial stage. Professor Dr. Amin U. Sarkar, Vice Chancellor of NSU, attended the programme as chief guest, while Professor Dr. G.U. Ahsan, Chairman of Public Health Department, chaired the session. Professor Dr. A.N.M. Meshquat Uddin, Pro Vice Chancellor; Professor Dr. Sirajul Islam Khan, Dean, School of Life Sciences, NSU; Khadiza Lina, Programme Coordinator, USAID; Saidul Islam, Assistant Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare; and Professor Dr. Abdul Wahed were also present as special guests at the signing ceremony.
