SPRING TRIMESTER BEGINS AT IUB

Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) organised an orientation programme on January 18, 2014 at its campus for the newly admitted students of the spring trimester.
In his short speech, Professor M. Omar Rahman, Vice Chancellor of IUB, welcomed the newcomers and urged them to contribute to the society, besides education. He said that IUB inspires its students to think differently and it is a knowledge-based university unlike other performance-based universities. Dr. Sarwar Uddin Ahmed, Dean, School of Business; Dr. Ali Shihab Sabbir, Dean, School of Engineering & Computer Science; Professor M. Ali Hossain, Dean, School of Environmental Science & Management; Dr. Mahbub Alam, Acting Dean, School of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences; Dr. Rita Yusuf, Dean, School of Life Sciences; Dr. Tanvir A. Khan, Registrar of IUB, also addressed the newly admitted students.

Workshop at Eastern University

Department of English of Eastern University (EU) organised a workshop on teaching and writing on January 15, 2014. Dr. Sharmin S. Khan from San Jose State University, California, USA facilitated the workshop. Dr. Sharmin Khan, Ph.D. in Language and Literacy from the University of California, Berkely, is currently teaching both B.A. and M.A. students at the Department of Linguistics and Language Development, San Jose State University, California. The workshop focused on the elements of good writing, cycle of assessment, creating rubrics and providing feedback. Selected faculty members from all departments of Eastern University attended the workshop. Vice Chancellor of Eastern University, Professor Dr. Abdur Rab, inaugurated the workshop. Among others, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Professor Kashinath Roy; Chair of English Department, Sureya Huda; Dr. Nurul Islam; Iffat Ara Nasreen Majid were present at the workshop.

Annual Photography Exhibition of DUPS

Dhaka University Photographic Society (DUPS) is organising their 6th Annual Photography Contest & Exhibition-2014 from February 2 to 5 at Zainul Gallery, Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka. This contest took place in five categories -- portrait, fine art, festival, landscape and life, and over 50 participants took part in it. After a rigorous evaluation, 42 photographs were selected for the annual exhibition.
Apart from the exhibition, DUPS will also hold workshop, seminar and publish souvenir marking the programme. The exhibition aims at showcasing the scenic beauty of our country and all the photos carry positive connotation. Opening ceremony of this exhibition will be held on February 2 at 4pm. Professor Dr. A.A.M.S. Arefin Siddique, Chief Advisor of DUPS and Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University, will inaugurate the exhibition. Abdullah Abu Sayeed, Founder chairman of Bishwa Sahitya Kendra, will be the chief guest, while Syeed Abul Barq Alvi, Dean of Faculty of Fine Arts, DU and Dr. Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan, Chairman, Department of Television & Film Studies, will be there as special guests. The exhibition will remain open from 10am to 8pm daily during the four days.
DUPS recently completed 14 years. The organisation, based at TSC, Dhaka University, aims to do something different to promote the art of photography. Over the years, DUPS has carried out different activates including photo exhibition and contests to encourage young photographers.

Seminar at SUB on Higher Education

State University of Bangladesh (SUB) organised a seminar on “Higher Education: Regional Perspective, English as Skill” as a part of faculty development programme at its campus on January 18, 2014. Professor Dr. Iftekhar Ghani Chowdhury, Vice Chancellor of SUB, presented the keynote paper. In his speech, the Vice Chancellor emphasised that without regional or national connectivity between educational institutions, development is not possible and learning “English as skill” is a must for all to communicate with the outside world. Professor A.M.M. Hamidur Rahman, Advisor, Department of English Studies, presented another paper on “Transforming English Language Skills in Higher Education Sector in Bangladesh (TELSHEB) -- Project of British Council and University Grants Commission of Bangladesh (UGC)”. Professor Hamid highlighted different modules developed for the learners and the faculty members at the tertiary level in Bangladesh. Both speeches were followed by discussion sessions.
Among others, Dr. A.M. Shamim and Dr. Md. Mahbubur Rahman, President and Vice-President of the Board of Trustees of the university were present at the seminar. The seminar ended with awarding “Faculty of the Year 2013” to the best teachers of different departments. Dr. A.M. Shamim, President, Board of Trustees, handed over certificates and crests to the best faculty members.
