Budget FY27: Metro expansion, electric buses planned to transform Dhaka commute
The government has laid out plans to expand Dhaka’s mass transit network, introduce electric buses and improve public transport services as part of its transport sector priorities in the proposed budget for FY 2026-27.
According to budget plan, the government has adopted short, medium and long-term plans for the development of the transport sector to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
Transparency and efficiency in public transport are expected to improve through the expansion of integrated ticketing systems, rapid pass services and online platforms.
To reduce traffic congestion and improve the urban environment in Dhaka and surrounding areas, the government is developing a metro rail network comprising six MRT lines.
After launching MRT Line-6, the government is now advancing construction work on MRT Line-1 and MRT Line-5: Northern Route.
Planning activities for MRT Line-5: Southern Route, MRT Line-2 and MRT Line-4 are also progressing, according to the budget documents.
The government also plans to develop a monorail-based feeder network to connect metro rail terminal points with different destinations. The move is expected to improve passenger services and make the urban transport system more efficient.
According to the budget announcement, the government said women-friendly and safer public transport systems would help increase women’s participation in economic activities.
It also said fully electric metro rail and bus systems would help reduce air and noise pollution, contributing to environmental protection.
Once implemented, the initiatives are expected to create an integrated, safe and future-oriented urban transport network and strengthen connectivity between Dhaka and surrounding areas.
