13 lives lost on roads in a day

Thirteen people were killed and 42 injured in road accidents across the country yesterday, according to reports from our correspondents.

In Dhaka, a bicyclist was killed after a bus crashed into his bicycle in Moghbazar area.

The deceased -- Bhola Nath, 45, from Keraniganj -- worked at a workshop in Moghbazar, said his nephew Rajani Kanta Saha.

Bhola Nath used to cycle to his workplace regularly, he added.

The accident happened in front of Grand Plaza around 10am, said Kazi Mainul Islam, officer-in-charge of Ramna Police Station.

The OC said they arrested the driver and seized the bus of Gazipur Paribahan.

In Dhamrai, at least 25 people were injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck on Dautia bridge of Dhaka-Aricha highway around 4pm, said police.

The accident also caused traffic congestion on the both sides of the highway as the vehicles could not be moved until 5:30pm.

In Jhenidah, three women were killed and eight people injured as a truck hit a three-wheeler from behind at Laudia bus stand in Sadar upazila, said Dilip Kumar Sarkar, station officer at Jhenidah Fire Service and Civil Defence Station.

Poly Khatun, 40, from Bishoykhali village died on the spot. The other women, whose identities could not be known immediately, succumbed to their injuries at Faridpur Medical College Hospital, he said.

The accident occurred around 11am while the three-wheeler was going to Kaliganj, said the fire service officer.

The injured were undergoing treatment at the hospital. Police seized the truck while the driver and his helper managed to flee. The bodies were sent to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

In Barishal, a woman and her son were killed and four people injured after a three-wheeler and a cement-laden truck collided head-on in the city’s Sagardi Alia Madrasa area.

The dead were identified as Delowara Begum, 60, and her son Shipon, 35, from Sri Ramkathi village in Nalchity upazila of the district, said police.

The injured -- Swapon, Morsheda, Rabiul and Anis -- were admitted to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal.

Najmul Alom, sub-inspector of SBMCH police camp, said the three-wheeler was going to Rupatali from Nathullabad bus terminal in Barishal.

Due the collision, the three-wheeler was badly damaged. The bodies were sent to SBMCH morgue for autopsy. Police seized the truck and detained its and driver and his helper.

In Faridpur, a man was killed instantly and two persons were injured when a truck and an auto-rickshaw collided head-on on Bishwa Road intersection of Dhaka-Khulna highway in Bhanga upazila around 7am.

The deceased -- identified as Kuddus Fakir, 48, from Charaldia village in the upazila -- was the battery-run auto-rickshaw driver, said police.

Bhanga highway police said the accident took place around 7am. The injured were taken to Bhanga Upazila Health Complex.

After the accident, the truck driver fled the scene with truck, they said.

In Mymensingh, a battery-run auto-rickshaw hit a schoolboy on Nandail-Hossainpur road, leaving him dead.

The deceased -- Fardin, 7, son of Saidul Islam from Achargoan in Nandail -- was a second-grader of Achargaon Government Primary School, said police.

He was on his way to school around 10am when the accident occurred.

Locals rushed Fardin to Nandail Upazila Health Complex where he was declared dead, said Sub-inspector Md Abdul Karim of Nandail Police Station.

Soon after the incident, locals and Fardin’s fellows blocked Mymensingh-Kishoreganj road for an hour, disrupting traffic. Later, police brought the situation under control.

Police seized the auto-rickshaw but its driver managed to flee the scene.

Elsewhere, Dulal Mia, 60, from Jhalua village in Nandail, died after he fell off a moving rickshaw in Nandail Bazar area.

 He was taken to Nandail Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead, said police.

In Jashore, two people were killed as a Khulna-bound bus from Dhaka hit them on Khulna-Jashore highway in Jafarpur of Abhoynagar upazila.

The deceased -- Golam Rabbani, 70, and Joshna Begum, 34 -- were from Dattogati village in the upazila, said Noapara Highway Police Station SI Omar Faruk.

The accident occurred as the bus driver lost control over the vehicle, said the SI.

They seized bus but the driver fled immediately after the accident, he added.

In Sylhet, two cousins were killed and three people injured in a head-on collision between two CNG-run auto-rickshaws in Charkhai of Beanibazar upazila.

The deceased were identified as Tahmina Akhter, 18, and Tinni Begum, 8, from Caraboi Maijpara village in the upazila.

Tahmina died on the spot while Tinni on the way to Sylhet MAG Medical College Hospital, said police. Tahmina was a student of Beanibazar Government College and Tinni a third-grader of Caraboi Government Primary School.

Oboni Shankar Kar, officer-in-charge of Beanibazar Police Station, said both the vehicles were being driven recklessly.

The injured were undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Police seized the vehicles, said the OC.
