Academic activities halted in 3 depts

Demonstrations regarding transfer of the environmental science department of Jahangirnagar University to a new building halted academic activities of three departments yesterday.

The environmental science department staged an indefinite sit-in demanding they be transferred to the new building, a move which was supposed to take place a year ago.

However, two other departments -- computer science and engineering and geological sciences --, housed in the new building, began their own demonstrations against the move saying the building was not big enough for three departments.

All three departments have been boycotting classes and examinations for the last three days as a part of their demonstrations.

Meanwhile, authorities formed a five-member team yesterday to look into the situation and within seven working days submit a report and recommendations, based on which a decision would be taken.
