Child dies from shock after witnessing road accident
Two people, including a four-year-old, died after a pick-up van ran one of them over at Bakhrabad area in Debidwar upazila of Cumilla around 9:30am.
The deceased are Masum Billah, 21, and Mariam Akter, daughter of Ramjan Ali.
Ramjan said he, his friend Masum and Mariam were going to a restaurant. At that time, a pick-up van driver lost control of the vehicle, ran over Masum and fell into a roadside ditch.
Masum died on the spot. Seeing his dead body, Mariam screamed and lost consciousness. Ramjan took her to a nearby health complex where doctors declared her dead. She, however, was not injured in the accident, he added.
Cumilla’s Civil Surgeon Dr Md Mujibur Rahman said she died of shock. “Sometimes one’s heart can fail after experiencing a frightening or panic-inducing incident.”
Md Monirul Islam, in-charge of Eliotganj highway police outpost, confirmed the incident. He said the van was seized and its driver was detained.
Meanwhile, at least eight people were killed and four others injured in other accidents across the country yesterday, our correspondents and news agencies report.
In Jashore, two people, including a schoolgirl, were killed on the spot, and one was injured after a truck hit their motorbike in Kadomtola Khajura area in Sadar upazila around 7:15pm, police quoted locals as saying.
The deceased are Salam Hossain, 20, and his niece Maliha Akter, 14, daughter of Salim Mia and a ninth-grader at Jashore New Town Girls’ School.
The injured is Maliha’s cousin Taiyaba Khatun, 15, also a student at the school. She was admitted to Jashore General Hospital.
Rafiqul Islam, in-charge of Khajura police outpost, said on information, police recovered the bodies and sent them to the hospital’s morgue for autopsy. Police seized the truck but its driver and helper fled the scene. A case was filed in this connection.
In Chandpur, a seven-year-old boy was killed and his mother injured after a pick-up van collided with the three-wheeler they were in at Shahi Zame Masjid intersection in the town, said police.
The deceased is Nazmul Hasan, son of Md Abdul Quader and Nasima Begum.
Both the mother and son were injured in the accident, and rushed to Chandpur Government General Hospital where doctors pronounced the child dead.
Police have seized the pickup van. The woman was being treated at the hospital.
In Dinajpur, six-year-old Aradhan Roy, son of Naresh Chandra Roy, died after falling off a rickshaw-van at Bordhat village in Biral upazila, said police, quoting family members.
He was critically injured after falling off and died on the way to the nearby health complex.
In Jhenidah, police constable Amirul Islam, 25, was killed after a bus hit his motorbike at Chalabhara Bus Stand area of Sadar upazila around 11am, said police, quoting locals.
He was on-duty at Katlagari police camp in the upazila.
On information, police reached the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
The bus driver fled the scene with the vehicle after the accident.
In Chattogram, two people were killed and two injured after a bus hit the CNG-run auto-rickshaw they were in at Kalipur union in Banshkhali upazila around 9am, said police quoting locals.
The deceased are Kartik Mandal, 41, and Md Jiyaul Haque, 45.
Jiyaul’s wife and daughter Yeasmin Akther and Johra Akther were taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) in critical condition.
Kartik died on the spot and Jiyaul died while undergoing treatment at CMCH, they added.
Police seized the bus but its driver fled the scene.
In Kurigram, Apel Mahmud, 22, a tractor helper, was killed after two tractors collided at Brac intersection area in Phulbari upazila around 9:30am, said police.
After the collision, Mahmud fell off the tractor and was run over. He was seriously injured.
Locals took him to the nearby health complex where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
After the accident, the tractors’ drivers fled the scene. Police seized the tractors, and a case was filed in this connection.
