Gather trash at one place to ease collection
Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Annisul Huq yesterday urged the shop owners to gather the garbage of their markets in specific places at night so that workers can easily clean those the next morning.
"We do not want to take action as we know" to discipline the city dwellers, cooperation is more necessary than the enforcement of law, Annis told a discussion with different shop owners' leaders in the capital's Krishibid Institution auditorium.
He asked developers or others concerned not to keep their construction materials or garbage on the streets or dump those into drains.
"Sixty percent of garbage of the city is generated at different markets, shopping complexes and shops and in many cases shop owners dump their waste into drains," said Mobassher Chowdhry, standing committee chairman of garbage management of DNCC.
Bipon Kumar Saha, chief waste management officer of DNCC, said 300 tonnes of garbage is generated in Karwan Bazar wholesale kitchen market alone every day and DNCC had to face huge difficulties to manage it.
SA Kader Kiron, president of Bangladesh Dokan Malik Samity, directed every shop owner to issue a circular to gather their garbage in a bag first and, later, dump into a common container.
