JU journalism teachers continue class boycott for chairperson's removal

JU Correspondent

All three teachers of the journalism and media studies department of Jahangirnagar University yesterday continued work abstention for the third consecutive day, demanding removal of the chairperson.

The teachers already sent a letter to the vice chancellor (VC) alleging that the chairperson, Dr Amina Islam, takes decisions without holding any academic council meetings, misbehaves with teachers and students, does not participate in any programme organised by the department and also did not support them in their protest against the incident where police beat up their fellow teacher Rakib Ahmed, an assistant professor.

A final-year exam was cancelled on May 17 due to the work abstention. But Assistant Professor Rakib Ahmed said the remaining exams would be held as per schedules and the VC had assured them of taking necessary measures.

When contacted, Amina refused to make any comment on this issue.

Expressing concern over the academic career, many students also complained that the chairperson is not friendly towards students.

The department is being run with only four teachers, including Amina, and without own classroom, lab and library since its inception in 2012.
