An inmate died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital yesterday.

Abdul Alim Rana, 30, son of Mohammad Ismail, lived at Banshbari in Mohammadpur.

His brother Kajal told The Daily Star that Rana fell ill in police remand and died yesterday.

Mohammadpur police Officer-in-Charge Jamaluddin Mir said locals beat Rana as he was preparing to commit mugging on Humayun Road on February 19. Later, they handed him over to police, he said.

Two cases were filed against him -- one arms case and another for attempted robbery.

Rana was first sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Hospital and, later, shifted to DMCH. Afterwards, police took him to a one-day remand.

The OC claimed that police did not beat Rana and he was produced before the court.

Prison sources said since February 21 an ailed Rana was in Dhaka Central Jail. Jail authorities once took him to DMCH where he was treated. He was again taken to DMCH and his condition deteriorated on the way.
