RU celebrates 62nd founding anniversary

Marking the 62nd founding anniversary of Rajshahi University, its teachers, students and staff yesterday vowed to establish social justice in all sphere of life.
Vice Chancellor Prof Muhammad Mizanuddin inaugurated the programme at 10:30am by hoisting the university flag and the national flag at the administrative building. A colourful procession with banners and festoons was brought out on the campus.
Later, at a discussion at the senate bhaban, teachers and students also vowed to establish a violence free campus and ensure smooth flow of researches and other academic activities.
The VC recalled the sacrifice of Ru proctor Prof Shamsuzzoha who was shot dead in 1969 while he was pleading with the Pakistani military not to shoot students who were protesting the killing of Sergeant Zahurul Haque, an accused of the Agartala conspiracy case.
RU Pro-VC Prof Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan, Treasurer Prof Sayen Uddin Ahmed, Registrar Prof Entajul Haque and Students' Adviser Prof Sadequl Arefin Matin spoke among others.
The university authorities also launched a month-long tree plantation programme on the campus.
RU started its journey on July 6, 1953, with only 161 students and 68 teachers in six departments under three faculties and with Prof Itrat Hossain Zuberi as the VC. At present, it has about 33,000 students and 1,200 teachers in 50 departments under nine faculties, and five research institutes.
