Ruet students seek withdrawal of new credit system
Over a hundred students of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (Ruet) demonstrated on the campus yesterday demanding that the authorities withdraw the "new credit system".
They laid siege to the vice chancellor's office for three hours from 11:00am pressing home their demand. The agitators withdrew after the VC came out of his office with police protection.
They also shut offices of Ruet. Earlier in the morning, the students formed a human chain and then organised a rally near the administrative building.
Mahmud Hossain, one of the agitating students, said under the new system if a student cannot manage to secure 33 credits out of 40 in one year, he or she has to repeat the year with junior students.
He said before the system, students who fell short of the required credits, got their credits by completing short courses in their final year.
Addressing reporters on campus, Vice Chancellor Prof Rafiqul Alam Beg said the system was introduced in 2013 for the students' own good and their demand for withdrawing it is illogical.
However, he said they would consider the demand.
Out of 725 students, only 29 could not manage the required credits in the ongoing academic session due to their own failures, he said.
