Ruta for same payscale for professors, secys

Rajshahi University Teachers Association (Ruta) yesterday demanded that the payscale for senior professors be the same as that of senior secretaries, and for professors as that of secretaries.

They protested the eighth payscale for "disgracing university teachers". The organisation made their demands at a press conference on the university campus.

They urged the government to restore the dignity of the teachers by reconsidering the payscale before final approval from the cabinet.

They also urged the government to reinstate the time scale and selection grade, which would put the senior professors in the same level as that of senior secretaries.

Ruta also reiterated their demand for a separate payscale for university teachers as soon as possible.  

They said due to poor pay, the public university teachers are forced to teach at private universities and other institutes, which ultimately deprives students.

Ruta threatened to go for demonstrations if their demands are not met.

Ruta president Prof Ananda Kumar Saha, among others, addressed the conference.
