Shafiqul takes charge as DMP commissioner

Md Shafiqul Islam, the newly-appointed commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), took charge yesterday as the successor of DMP Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Miah.

Earlier on August 28, the public security division of the home ministry issued a gazette notification regarding Shafiqul’s appointment as the 34th DMP commissioner.

Shafiqul, son of Shawkat Ali and Sufia Khatun from Naoda Bondo Beel village in Alamdanga upazila of Chuadanga, was born on October 30, 1962 and is known for his “clean” image in the police force.

After completing his BSc (honours) from Bangladesh Agricultural University in 1986, he joined Bangladesh Civil Service (Police) as assistant superintendent of police in 1989.

Shafiqul served as the AIG in Khagrachhari, superintendent of police of Syedpur Railway Police, Narayanganj, Patuakhali, Sunamganj and Cumilla.

Shafiqul also served as the additional commissioner and commissioner of Chattogram. He was appointed the DIG of Chattogram and Dhaka Range.

He was promoted to the rank of additional IG in September 2017 and served as the additional IG HRM and Anti-Terrorism Unit. He was transferred as the chief of CID on May 19.

Before assuming office as DMP chief, he served as chief of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police.

 Outgoing DMP Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Miah has been appointed the chief executive officer of National Security Affairs Cell under the Cabinet Division for three years on a contractual basis.

Ministry of Public Administration issued a gazette notification in this regard on September 3.
