Some Sust teachers again demand VC's resignation
A section of teachers of the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust) yesterday reiterated their demand for resignation of the vice chancellor accusing him of committing corruption in recruitments, practising nepotism, and misbehaving with colleagues.
The protesters, under the banner "Mahan Muktijuddher Chetonay Udbuddho Shikkhak Brindo", staged a one-hour sit-in in front of the library building from 12:00 noon.
VC Prof Md Aminul Haque Bhuyan is due to join office on June 24 after a two-month leave. Contacted yesterday, he declined to comment on their demand.
On April 13, three teachers went to the VC to discuss the distribution of classrooms but he did not give them enough time and instead had an altercation, said the protesters. Terming it an insult, a group 37 teachers have been demanding his resignation ever since.
Earlier, the VC, an ex-director of the nutrition and food science institute at Dhaka University, admitted he could not give them enough time but said it was because of his wife's illness that day.
Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, a professor of computer science and engineering, also one of the protesters, said Sust teachers should be appointed VCs. "It will solve all problems."
The protesters threatened to step down from all administrative posts like dean, provost, and proctor if their demand was not met.
