Stop sand extraction from 2 Ctg canals: HC

The High Court yesterday asked the government to immediately stop extraction of sand from Dolu and Sorai canals in Lohagora upazila of Chittagong to protect the waterbodies and local environment.

In response to a writ petition by Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela), the court also asked the authorities to explain in four weeks why they should not be directed to declare the canals ecologically critical areas and to remove Balu Mohals (sand enclosures) from their banks.
