Teenager commits suicide over "detaining" mother and sister in Ctg, SI closed

Star Online Report

A sub-inspector (SI) of Double Mooring Police Station was closed in his post earlier today after an 18-year-old teenage boy committed suicide after police allegedly detained his mother and sister over his role in beating-up another youth.

The incident took place at the port city's Boro Mashid Lane of Badamtali area in Agrabad at 11:30pm last night, reports our Chattogram staff correspondent quoting Faruk Ul Haque, deputy commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP West).

CMP formed a two-member probe body to investigate the incident and asked it to submit a report by 5:00pm today.

The deceased was identified as Md Salman Islam Maruf and the closed SI has been identified as Md Helal Uddin.

Witnesses and locals said Maruf allegedly beat a youth suspecting him of being a thief, near his house on Thursday night. The youth, beaten by Maruf, introduced himself as a police informant.

Minutes after the incident, SI Helal Uddin, in plainclothes, came to the spot and tried to pick up Maruf while his mother and sister tried to resist, triggering a scuffle, locals said.

DC Faruk said "At one point, Maruf managed to escape from the scene while his sister suddenly fainted on the spot."

"Later, a patrol team of police took his sister and mother to Agrabad's Maa O Shishu Hospital for treatment but Maruf thought that police detained his mother and sister for his actions," said the DC.

The boy later committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence. Police recovered his body after being informed, added the DC.

"We don't know what actually happened there -- we formed a probe committee to assess the details of the incident and closed SI Helal's post after allegations arose," the DC said.

Meanwhile, locals staged a demonstration after the incident, demanding justice.

Police filed an unnatural death case in this connection and the teenager's body was sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) morgue for autopsy.

Action would be taken against SI Helal if found guilty, DC Maruf informed.
