Wife of Baghdad Group chair arrested at Dhaka airport
Police arrested wife of a businessman from the capital yesterday afternoon in connection with several cases filed by different banks of Chattogram over default loan.
The arrestee was identified as Meherun Nesa, 50, wife of Ferdous Khan Alamgir, chairman of Chattogram-based Baghdad Group.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khulshi Police Station Pranab Chowdhury said immigration police at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport detained Meherun Nesa in the afternoon after she had arrived from Canada in a flight and then handed her over to a team from Khulshi Police Station.
The team, along with the arrestee, was on the way to Chattogram till filing of this report at 10:30pm.
“The arrestee, who was living in Canada, was convicted in a few cases and there was arrest warrant against her. So, we gave a letter to the immigration police regarding the warrant,” said the OC.
The amount of default loan could not be known immediately, but police suspect that it could be over Tk 100 crore.
According to sources in the Money Loan Court, the group that started operating a dozen of air-conditioned buses on Dhaka-Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar route in 2013 is burdened with over Tk 100 crore in default loans to several banks including Islami Bank, Rupali Bank, First Security Islami Bank, Bank Asia and others.
